To be a safe driver
-
Have
you ever had an experience of being in car accident or ha ve seen
your friends or family members driving irresponsibly? -
What
steps can you take to be a better and safer driver as well as help
others become safer on the road?
Over
1.25 million people die in car accidents each year. When that
statistic is broken down, it means that over three thousand people
die a day because of reckless driving and that doesn’t even count
the amount of people who are just injured because of car accidents.
These numbers could be easily reduced if drivers of all ages took
driver safety courses/ classes. When a person educates themselves on
the rules of the road and the skills it takes to drive, they become a
driver that is safer to be on the road with and will be saving lives
and money in the long run.
“…a
bad driver was only safe until she met another bad driver” (190) is
a quote from F Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The
Great Gatsby, and I
don’t think there is any better quote that describes a person’s
view of careless driving. A careless driver believes themselves to be
untouchable because they expect those around them to be careful
drivers; however, as soon as a careless driver meets another careless
driver, it is nearly impossible to change their ways before an
accident has happened. By taking driver’s courses or requiring
classes in school, we are teaching the next generation of drivers to
head to the rules of the road, and therefore, there should be a drop
in car accidents.
I,
myself, have been in one car accident, though it was due to icy
roads and my mom was driving. No one in the car was hurt, it was just
a jarring experience. I have been in the car when my dad is driving
and while he has never been in an accident, he is an irresponsible
driver. In fact, he has gotten so many speeding tickets his license
was nearly taken away from him. He had to take an 8 hour driver
safety course that would knock of points from his license. But what
is the good of taking the course after you have already put yourself
and others in danger so many times? It would be better if everyone
would be required to take the class before getting their Level 3
license, so there would be no excuse for not knowing the rules of the
road.
I,
myself, think besides taking the driver’s safety course the best a
person can do to be safe on the road is awareness. You have to be
aware of those around you and alway be cautious.
