Drive
like Your Children Live Here

I
would consider myself to be placed in the minority of people who are,
partially, scared of driving. Sometimes, however, I feel as though I
am the only person that feels this way. Drivers ed has helped
me out immensely though. The class of Drivers ed is important
because it allows people to become educated on driving skills in
general. It allows people to see what would happen to them if they
were extremely overconfident or nervous about their own abilities.
Drivers ed is also important in reducing the number of deaths
caused by driving in that the instructors will correct common causes
of accidents. These include not using a seat belt, speeding, being
distracted, and many more.

There
are many steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths
related to driving. However, the most important one is to be a
defensive driver. My driving instructor defined defensive driving as
looking out for the safety of others and being aware of your
surroundings. Being a defensive driver will cover all other steps
necessary to reduce the number of driving-related deaths. Some other
steps that would be covered if someone took control of the defensive
driving initiative, include no texting, no drinking, no smoking, and
others. People need to apply this like their children live there.
Then the driving world would be a much safer place. This does not
mean driving slow everywhere.

In
terms of driving safely, I have come to a near-fatal experience with
my brother. He was driving along and getting ready to turn left onto
another four lane road. However, it was raining pretty hard outside,
and we were in a truck. As he was turning left, he pressed on the gas
pedal too hard, and the truck fishtailed. We landed in the left turn
lane going the opposite direction of where we originally wanted to
go. Throughout the whole process, I was laughing while my life
flashed before my eyes. I realize, now, that if I would have died or
gotten seriously hurt, laughing was not the best choice in the
moment.

In
order for me to become a better and safer driver is to practice and
pay attention to my surroundings. I like to stay at home whenever I
can, but driving can take me places that I would miss out on. Paying
attention to my surroundings while driving will help me to be a safer
driver because I am the one to get easily distracted. I would
encourage others to become a better and safer driver by practicing as
well, but also making quick decisions. If you do not make a quick
decision, it could be a life or death situation. I would also advise
others to not apologize to yourself or to others when you make a
driving mistake. Sorry is not going to cut it when you get in an
accident, so why say it now? Just remember, if you had a child, drive
like they lived there.
