Your Life Could Change in an Instant, Drive safely
“Ring..ring” was the noise I heard from my dad’s cellphone. He
answered the phone “yes…wait” he passed the cellphone to my
brother, Oscar and all I saw was his face turn super pale and he
started to tell my dad “mi mama tuvo un accidente de automovile.”
My heart sank to the floor and I wanted to cry but I didn’t want to
make my little sister cry too, so I held it in. Hours had gone by and
no one would tell us what was going on with my mom. I could tell that
my dad was not thinking straight by the worried expression on his
face. It almost looked as if he was about to cry, which was very
strange since I’ve never seen him cry. My mom was not the same
after that tragic accident. She never wanted to drive on the highway
ever again. She was terrified of truck trailers. But, As time went by
I saw her gain her courage and finally was able to drive on the
highway again.
Going into high
school I knew that one of the things I was going to have to take was
drivers ed. Gosh, I was not ready to be stuck in a class for 2+
hours. My mom was one of the main ones that encouraged me to pay
close attention in class. She told me she wished they had this in
Mexico. I never knew my mom was not as privileged as I was in high
school so I made sure I pay close attention to everything my
instructor said. Before I knew it, I got my permit and later received
my license.
Drivers ed is
one of the many ways one can learn to be a good driver. Being a good
driver, as I had to learn over the years isn’t always about knowing
everything that’s in the book, but also being able to act upon a
situation which requires fast thinking. Driving involves many
multitasks like checking your rear-view mirrors and making sure that
you are clear ahead. While being in a class that teaches you about
the laws while driving one must also be able to practice performing
these actions. The more practice the better you become as a driver.
My parents have
never been a big fan of letting me drive to places even if I already
have my license but the truth is how else are we going to learn if we
don’t do it now? I know that one of the greatest fears my parents
have is losing me, and I understand their fear, there are many
reckless drivers out there and we never know when something could
happen. This is why we have to educate those around us starting with
friends and family. I always make sure that my family and friends are
not on their phones and always paying attention to other drivers on
the road.
