We Don’t Need Distractions
The
main threat in the driving world are new and young drivers. Being a
young driver myself, I know that the feeling of this newfound freedom
and independence can cause our focus whilst driving to stray away
from the roads. Although there are an abundance of attention on the
dangers we face while driving all over all types of media, we tend to
turn our heads passed these awarenesses to all of the other eye
catching apps and videos lingering around.
Before
receiving our permits, most states requires us to take a drivers
education class. In this class, we learn all of the aspects to
driving and what we need to do in certain situations. This class
taught me everything I needed to know to do when driving so truly
without this class, I would be clueless behind the wheel. With the
many situations we come across while driving, drivers ed is
very important to have since its main purpose is to be sure we know
everything about what to do when driving.
Although
all that I learned is from drivers ed, the one thing I do not
recall learning about is distracted driving. Even from seeing the
multiple awarenesses spread across social media, I still had not
taken it serious at all until I was involved in an accident caused by
distracted driving. My whole family including the dog was in our van
when my father, who does not having hearing, had been looking at me
in the back through his rearview mirror to listen to a story I was
telling. With his attention off of the road, he ran a red light
without realizing it leading us to be t-boned by another car.
Although we were lucky that no one was hurt, it still should not have
taken an experience like this for me to realize the importance of
having your focus only on the road.
To
prevent more accidents like this, drivers ed should be
required for everyone before acquiring a permit or license as well as
a good chunk of the class itself solely focused on distracted driving
with a test about it required to be passed. If my class just had us
learn about distracted driving, i’d know before the accident how a
small and short distraction from the road can cause a stressful
crash. Until drivers ed starts bringing more awareness towards
distracted driving, we all as the drivers in action need to start
taking all distractions seriously by putting our phones on silent and
out of sight and being sure that we ignore all distractions and keep
our minds on the roads as well as our driving.
To
conclude, the importance of distractions while driving should be
taught in he hands of the drivers ed educators rather than the
internet. We aren’t required to do what the internet tells us but
we are required to obey our educators who grants us our license.
