Driver
education programs for teen drivers are designed to prepare beginning
drivers for license testing and licensing. Drivers ed courses
typically combine both classroom instruction on topics such as
vehicle safety, laws and regulations, vehicle operation, and factors
affecting driving (alcohol, road conditions, distraction, etc.) and
behind-the-wheel driving practice with a trained instructor. Most
examinations of drivers ed have focused on crashes. This makes
sense as crashes, especially fatal crashes, are the most significant
and important negative outcome for teen drivers. Traffic violations,
however, represent another type of important negative outcome.
Whether due to inexperience or deliberate decision, most risky
driving such as speeding, driving too close, texting, or recklessness
is also driving that is in violation of driving statutes. Higher
instances of violations have been found to be associated with teen
fatal crashes. There are
simple steps that can be taken to reduce your
risks, as outlined below. The key points are to obey
the traffic laws, be
predictable, avoid distractions, drive rested,
and steer clear of alcohol and drugs. Do this, and you’ll help make
the roads safer for all. An analysis conducted by AAA, the nation’s
largest motoring club, found that drivers’ education reduces
teen crash rates by 4.3 percent and lowers the number of
traffic tickets received by nearly 40 percent. The purpose of Drivers
education is to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and
attitudes needed for vehicle safety both as a driver and as
a pedestrian.
Make sure your brakes are working properly, your
tires are properly inflated, and your windows are clean. The better
the condition of your vehicle and the position of your body and your
mirrors within the car will give you more control when driving.
Just because you have your license doesn’t mean you shouldn’t
stop learning. When driving always be thinking about your
surroundings and paying attention to the road. The more you take
driving seriously, the better driver you will become.
