Is it that important to answer?
Is
it that
important to answer?
“911,
what´s your emergency?” “There was a car crash down Whisper Hill
Street.” “What was the cause?” “The driver was texting.”
Some people think this scenario is not that common but 1 out of 4 car
accidents in the United States is caused by texting while driving
according to Edgar Snyder & Associates web page.
Doesn´t
matter your age or if you are a driver or not, this subject affects
all of us. 10% of fatal crashes and 15% of injury crashes in 2015
were distraction-affected, according to EndDD.org. This is not just a
myth to scare you or a thing to joke around, this is a real problem.
Crashes
can be reduced by, first of all, driving education for anyone who is
going to take the wheel, also to put aside whatever thing that can
distract you, and of course not driving while drinking. We have to
admit that we have seen someone else use the phone while driving or
taking driving as a joke when it isn´t. If you have ever driven
while changing the song of your playlist or texting your mom back
because then she gets mad for not answering, you have to stop it,
imagine not only not answering to your mom or leaving a bad song
playing but taking away someone else´s life because of it.
Fortunately
I have never been in a car accident or have seen a relative in that
situation. But, unfortunately, I have seen friends of mine driving
while texting or without their seatbelt. Even though injuries and
deaths are the most serious consequences, they are not the only ones.
There are monetary fines, criminal charges, jail time, etc. Remember
I told you that this problem affects all of us? Well, being involved
in a car accident where there is someone that was seriously injured
or killed you could have criminal penalties depending on the state
you live in. You can receive traffic citations or accumulate many
points in your driving record that you can even lose your driving
privileges.
“In
a split second you could ruin your future, injure or kill others, and
tear a hole in the heart of everyone who loves you.” Said the
mother of texting while driving victim. We can make a whole problem
just to do something that can wait a little. We can make a big
negative impact in someone else´s life. You could just take out your
phone to text “see you soon.” but you never do. We as responsible
humans need to take care of this situation, and maybe you cannot
change the whole world and make people stop texting while driving but
we can start with ourselves and our friends and relatives. You now
know the consequences, why would you still take the risk?
