So
much power is embedded within a driver’s license. Driving has become
so common of a practice among society, that the dangers behind it are
often diminished. The average car weighs around 2,871 pounds. That
heavy machinery is being controlled by a single ordinary person, at
high speeds in usually crowded areas. Doesn’t it sound a lot more
intimidating when put like that? The person behind the wheel is not
only responsible for their personal safety, but the safety of those
around them. Despite all of this, the danger is overlooked because of
how common of a practice driving is. A distracted driver could easily
swerve into a packed car full of innocent children, or a normal
person jogging on the side of the road. These people’s lives are now
changed forever, all because of a certain driver’s selfish and
uninformed tendencies. When it is a matter of life and death, drivers’
education should in no way ever be taken lightly.
A
firm grasp of proper drivers ed could be what saves countless
lives.I had a friend that would drive recklessly often, even with me
in the car. He would swerve in and out of lanes super fast, speed,
and drive under the influence. I never spoke against these
mannerisms, as I did not want to be seen as a buzzkill. Fast forward
a week or so after hanging out with him, and he completely wrecks his
car. I think back to that time often, and wonder if the whole
situation could have been avoided if I would have spoken sooner
against the true danger he was putting himself, me, and others in. I
do not think it is said enough how important of a precaution it is
for people to hold their peers accountable for their driving. It is
easy to disregard the typical advice, such as turning phones off to
avoid distractions, but it sticks when someone you’re close to is
doing the forewarning. Something I, and others around me could start
doing to reduce the risk of unsafe driving is educate one another,
and speak out against any unsafe habits. Driving is not a negative
thing to fear, but in no way should it be taken lightly.
It
is impossible to go back in time and fix a mistake made while
driving. A split decision to respond to a text message, or answer a
phone call, could permanently ruin somebody else’s life. You can
never go back and change a fatal car crash, but you can always take
preventative measures. Change has to be made sooner rather than
later.
