“In the Driver’s Seat” Scholarship Essay

Learning
how to properly and safely operate a motor vehicle is a task that the
majority of people will have to face at some point in life. Many are
eager to learn as soon as they reach of age. However, this eagerness
is only safe when proper drivers ed courses are implemented.

Driver
Education courses allow drivers to not only learn how to drive, but
to fully understand how dangerous driving actually is. Driver
education courses provide useful knowledge that helps prevent car
crashes and traffic violations. Most car crashes are caused by driver
error. Therefore, if Drivers are properly educated on how to drive
safely in all conditions, there will be fewer crashes thus resulting
in fewer deaths by motor vehicles.

Preventative
measures to reducing the number of deaths by driving can be to ensure
that all drivers go a physical drivers ed course. Although
online is beneficial, it is more beneficial to allow drivers to have
hands on interaction built in with the online work. I have friends
that have never been enrolled in a drivers ed course, and it
shows. I notice a number of my friends driving irresponsibly and
reckless. Such recklessness might be texting while driving, knee
driving, eating while driving, and playing music at loud volumes. I
frequently advise them to correct their bad habits, but it appears
they only listen while I am present. If every driver is given the
proper knowledge on how to safely operate a motor vehicle, everyone
will benefit as everyone will be fully aware of consequences to poor
driving habits.

While
never being in a car accident myself, I have been in situations where
my keenness has allowed me to maneuver out of a possible crash. I
have been in situations where I have forgotten to indicate a turn via
my turn signal and have almost side swiped vehicles. I have also been
in situations where I am traveling at a speed that is significantly
above the speed limit. These are things that I can correct in order
to keep others, as well as myself safe on the roadways.

Altogether,
I believe safer driving can be possible for everyone. However, laws
and regulations will have to be implemented to ensure that everyone
receives the same education regarding driving.
