Life On The Road
Life
On The Road
The
old saying of “life is an adventure” can be understood in simpler
terms. Everytime you drive or being driven, you are putting your life
in someone’s or your hands; thus, to many Americans, the day of
turning 16 is celebratory for receiving their driver’s license and
starting to put their life on the road. With Americans spending 70
billion hours behind the wheel and nearly 1.25 million people dying
in road crashes around the globe each year, driving has become an
adventure, and so do our lives.
To
Learn :
Every
driver understands that a driver’s license is necessary; however, few
actually appreciate and acknowledge the importance of drivers
education. Of course, one might say that drivers ed is not
required, therefore, not needed; however, actually driving on the
road is not as simple as remembering everything on the drivers exam;
muscle memory must be built and skills must be learned under
instructions of well-trained professionals in the field. It is
statistically proven that young drivers not completing drivers
education are 75% more likely to get traffic tickets and 16% more
likely to have an accident (NewsRoom). These are not just numbers,
they are human lives at every single driver’s hands. Drivers
education has become critical and necessary as a perfect way to
prepare to drive, especially teens who are learning how to operate a
vehicle at a young age. Driving can be overwhelming, with hundreds of
cars on the road, it is a test of the ability to adapt, apply driving
knowledge, and more. With a proper drivers ed course prior
to obtaining a license, new drivers develop standard control of the
vehicle and positive and necessary attitudes of driving safely and
carefully.
To
Drive:
Every
year, the number of fatalities as a result of reckless driving has
been skyrocketing, it’s absolutely horrifying to think that these
numbers are higher than casualties from wars. Such a global epidemic
of road crashes is growing to become a public health and safety
concern. As the government starts to value the importance of safe
driving by passing laws requiring drivers ed, such as Joshua’s
law in Georgia state named after Joshua Brown who died in a car
accident as a result of inadequate driver training, we, as global
citizens, should start to take responsibilities in reducing car
accident rate.
Here
are some actions we could and should take:
-
Build
a well and critical understanding from the very beginning–Driver’s
education where people are being informed about road safety and
where they develop knowledge and safety concerns. -
Apply
everything you have learned while driving/ Be patient, be flexible,
and be careful. -
Call
others to action!! As students, you can start a safe driving
campaign in your community -
or
school. As adults, educate your children and those around you, join
a safe driving -
campaign,
associations or council.
Remember
that once you set your mind to take actions, no one can stop you.
