Behind
the Wheel

Driver
Education is crucial in reducing the risk of injury or even
fatalities behind the wheel. An individual with the proper knowledge
of how to act behind the wheel is more prone to make better choices
than someone who does not have a good grasp of basic knowledge.
Drivers ed is not only important for the individual that is
behind the wheel but the surrounding drivers and pedestrians sharing
the road. Proper schooling for drivers can help prevent collisions
and mistakes behind the wheel. Whether the accident is life
threatening or not any accident has a risk factor therefore is
equally important. In an effort to prove this point researchers
concluded that
teens
taking drivers ed are less likely to be involved in crashes or
to receive a traffic violation during their first two years of
driving. Therefore in an effort to prevent fatalities from occurring
steps must be taken to ensure that the number of deaths does indeed
decrease. Offering drivers ed as a mandatory class in school
can help open up conversations between teachers, parents, and
students. Just having that conversation can help change teenagers
behavior behind the wheel. Providing a drivers ed class can also
offer students a chance to dive in deeper into what to do when put in
a hazardous situation. The unfortunate reality is that many are not
aware of the dangers of getting behind the wheel but hopefully
offering a drivers ed class can enlighten many students. Not only
should this class be offered by schools and districts but this
mindset should also be adopted by all employers and businesses.
Parents should also be enlightened on subjects regarding drivers
education. My family has firsthand seen what reckless driving can do
ot only to the individuals involved in the collision but the family
of the individual. My cousin was involved in a collision and was very
severely hurt, and although he was not the one that caused the
collision he paid the price. He had several broken bones, but did
indeed recover with minimal nerve damage. He was one of the lucky
ones and never saw this coming. So from then on our family has made
it a priority to educate ourselves so that if there was ever a time
to use that knowledge we would be ready. One can take simple steps
such as reading up on basic knowledge and using resources to educate
yourself as well as keeping others accountable for when they do drive
irresponsibly.
