Drivers ed is intended to
provide students with the
knowledge
and skills needed for
vehicle
safety as a driver, as well as to obtain a permit or driver’s
license. During the drivers ed course, students will be
informed about the dangers of distracted driving, speeding, reckless
driving, and driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
According to the National Safety
Council, unfortunately, an
estimate
of 40,000 people lost their
lives
to car crashes in 2019, the majority of these accidents were caused
by distracted drivers, but a study that followed more than 150,000
drivers says that individuals taking the drivers ed course are
less likely to be involved in a car accident during their first two
years of driving. The AAA Foundation study also revealed the
difference between people who received drivers ed and people
who did not; the study showed that drivers ed is associated
with a lower chance of crashes and convictions. Drivers ed
reduced the amount of crashes by 4.3% and citations down to a
40%.There are plenty of other ways that individuals can do inorder to
reduce the amount of fatalities related to driving like making sure
that your car is in good conditions, drive only when you are
physically and mentally sound, making sure that you and everyone else
in the vehicle is wearing their seatbelt, drive defensively, obey
traffic laws, and most importantly to avoid distractions.
I have personally never been in a
car accident, but I have seen
how
a car accident can end
someone’s
life and affect the people around them. My aunt, a 43 year old mother
of two young children was the victim of a fatal car accident back in
2017, a drunk driver ran a red light and crashed into her car, the
impact was so tremendous that it took her life instantaneously. This
tragedy really affected our family emotionally but also opened our
eyes, in order to prevent more fatalities like these, my family and I
have pledged to always drive responsibly in honor for my aunt.
Getting behind the wheel takes a lot of responsibility and skills,
the drivers ed program helps students to become more aware of
the dangers when driving and teaches students useful skills in order
to create a safer environment and essentially save lives.
