The importance of safe driving
The whole purpose
of drivers ed is to teach new drivers how to operate a
motor vehicle and how to drive safely on the road. It’s a hands-on
experience that puts you behind the wheel and you learn as you go.
It’s essential for drivers ed reduce the number of deaths
related to driving because we want to keep our roads safe from
unnecessary dangers. Teaching safe driving habits and techniques
greatly improves the knowledge and skill for younger drivers and it
even improves the safety of the road.
There are many
steps and practices that could be enacted by drivers of any age to
reduce the number of deaths related to driving. A great example of
one of these practices is to drive without talking or texting on your
phone. Our cell phones have become greatly involved in our daily
life. They’re our private computers and most of our daily tasks
could be done from them. However, texting and talking on the phone
could be a major distraction while driving even for the most
experienced driver. Our brains weren’t meant to be able to
multitask to that level and it shows due to the number of car crashes
resulting from texting and talking on the phone while driving.
According to TeenSafe, you’re 23 times more likely to get into an
accident when using your phone while driving. TeenSafe has also
stated that cell phones are involved in about 1.6 million crashes a
year and 6,000 of those accidents resulted in death. Putting our
phones away while driving is an easy and effective way of reducing
the number of deaths when driving.
Another step in
reducing the amount of deaths related to driving is to drive while
not being under the influence. Drinking and driving is never a good
idea no matter the circumstance. Not only are you putting yourself at
risk of a crash or even death but you’re also putting your
passengers and other people who are sharing the road with you at risk
as well. Instead of driving while under the influence, call someone
to pick you up or have a designated driver to get you where you need
to be. It’s not worth putting everyone at risk by drinking and
driving.
There’s been
several instances where my family members didn’t practice safe
driving. One scenario depicted my cousin texting while driving and
speeding on top of that. Gratefully, we didn’t end up in a crash
but nonetheless it was irresponsible for him to do that. If you think
about what could have happened, the risk never amounts to anything.
Like I stated before, distracted driving is a major problem that is
putting a lot of people in danger on the road. As for myself, I’m
a novice driver and I believe the best way for me to become a safe
driver is to pick up safe driving habits. Learning these habits now
will help me in the future to stay alert and safe on the road.
