Safety
In
the month of April, during the year of 2018, my small town community
had experienced three deaths due to automotive incidents over the
expansion of a week. One person, who was my closest friend, was ran
over on a Sunday afternoon while the driver was texting, and died
underneath the car. She was a recent graduate, and had just started
the adventure of her lifetime. The following Friday, our coach from
the track team was driving under the influence, and had wrecked into
a bridge dying instantly as the car blew up. Then, one of the most
tragic deaths that week had occurred a day later, on Sunday again.
She was a Junior in High School, and was driving with her little
sister, and in an attempt to retrieve her phone, she unbuckled
herself and swerved, dying in a field right outside of town. Each
occurrence happened in such a short amount of time, and influenced
each age group from the community.
From every accident was a
different cause, so our community came together and expressed the
importance of seatbelts, calling a designated driver, and staying off
of the phone. However, it’s not that simple. People don’t listen.
Even after this week had passed, students still don’t follow the
law. We still mourn, and especially since it was so close to
graduation (one of the biggest mile markers in a person’s life) our
community had to learn how death doesn’t discriminate, even when
you’re in the driver seat.
