An Education Saves A Life

An
Education Saves a Life

The
sanctity of life is never fully understood until there is something
that threatens it. For young teens just embarking into the world,
earning a driver’s license is an exciting and momentous step
towards becoming an adult. However, in the midst of all that
excitement, there is always the possibility of danger. Driving
involves not only one’s own competence but it also involves the
competence of others. There must be a constant trust in one another
to respect the rules of the road. That is why it is important to
ensure that all drivers on the road know what they’re doing and
just how responsible they are, not only for their own lives but for
the lives of others.

I,
myself, have been involved in a minor accident, one that was handled
immediately and left no damage to me or my car. However, it made me
realize how lucky I am; I only suffered a small hit on a busy
freeway, but it could have been so much worse. Also, it was still
scary to have to go through that for the first time as a young
driver. It made me realize that things can always go bad if proper
precautions are not taken.

To
reduce the number of deaths on the road the most important step must
be education. There must be education in two parts: one will be to
explain the actual laws of driving; the other part will be to explain
the risks and consequences that come with driving. The first part is
vital so that people go out onto the road as fully capable and
competent drivers; they understand how to keep everyone safe. The
latter gives an understanding as to why the rules must be so closely
followed. When it is explained clearly, how dangerous driving can be,
drivers (especially young drivers) hold more respect for the road. An
example of how to do this is the Every 15 Minutes Program. It has
come to my school before and always leaves a lasting impact. The
program takes in a number of students and asks them to disappear for
a set amount of time, as if they had died in a car crash. It gets
very difficult as it requires parents to write an obituary and leaves
students and families to realize just how painful such a loss could
be. The program has always done an excellent job at displaying the
heartbreak that comes from irresponsible driving; it shows the
heartbreak of the losses, not just for drivers themselves, but for
their families, too.

To
ensure safety on the road it is important to first ensure that
everyone has a complete understanding of what driving involves. With
a complete knowledge, people will not only know how to, but will want
to be safer drivers on the road. They will want to create a safe
environment, not only for themselves, but for their family, friends,
and everyone else on the road.
