I have been driving for almost 2 years now and it has truly been
great. I remember being excited to take the test and I read the whole
drivers manual to be sure that I understood all of the safety
guidelines. Drivers I know have gotten comfortable and are more
relaxed on following rules even when they know them. All drivers know
that there is a speed limit but, now days everyone moves so fast and
in a rush that the rule is looked at as a suggestion. Speeding is one
of the leading causes of car crashes. If we’d give ourselves enough
time, we wouldn’t have to rush. Sometimes life happens, and you may
over sleep but just try your best not to. That is something that I am
working on- time management. There were a few times where I didn’t
give myself all the time I knew I needed to drive so I went a little
over the limit to try and save some time. That was not the most
responsible decision though. If we would just change one thing about
our driving habits to be safer, crash deaths would go down instead of
up.

I remember being
in the car with my family as a child, sitting in the backseat, and
boom, someone rams into the back of the car. I was scared, young, and
clearly didn’t understand whiplash. At the time I felt so hurt, I
remember complaining about my back and my neck, it was just whiplash
but me being a little dramatic I thought it could’ve been the end
of the world. While it was a long time ago, I still remember it and
that’s what matters. Because I remember it, I try my best to do
everything I can to avoid wrecks. The best way to reduce driving
related deaths, is to reduce the number of wrecks/collisions. I do
that by taking accountability for my actions as a driver. I try to be
more aware of my surroundings and be alert. If you know that you are
tired, then you should know that you shouldn’t go driving. I get as
much sleep as possible the night before when I know I’m going to be
driving a lot.

It’s good to
remind the drivers you know about some rules they may not pay
attention to anymore. There is so much new technology that can be
distracting. So, as a passenger I offer to help the driver if they
need to send a message or change the radio. When I’m in the car
with my grandmother for example, this is so helpful because it takes
her more time to read or send a message than it does a younger
person. According to the CDC you can drive the length of a football
field in 5 seconds. In that distance so much can happen that can
cause a crash and death. While you should be a responsible, alert
driver, but you can help as a passenger.
