was the day before my birthday. My best friend’s birthday was the
day before mine, so I was driving to his aunt’s house. It was a
lengthy drive, about thirty minutes, and it was raining. When I
pulled into his driveway I noticed a text on my phone from my mother.
It stated that my sister, Madison, got into a severe car accident and
that she was being transported to the local hospital. This is my
sister’s story, about how a simple mistake affected her physically,
emotionally, and socially. It is fairly common for people to do
different tasks while driving, thinking that the task will not put
them in danger. What happened that day was that my sister decided to
take off her sweatshirt while driving, which caused her to veer into
the opposite lane. Noticing that this was happening she over
corrected her car back into her lane. This caused her car to roll
four times. It wasn’t the first time that Madison took off her
sweatshirt while driving. And because she thought this small
distraction was going to be safe, it cost not only her, but her
family pain. As a result of this accident, she broke her neck and
head, she had a cut on her forehead that swelled and bruised the size
of my hand, she had glass and other forieng objects under her skin,
she had a severe concussion and much more. It is more than a miracle
that Madison was not parilized or dead. After the days it took her to
fully wake up, she was constantly screaming in pain. It was difficult
to witness this so I had to leave the room often. Madison had to
complete physical therapy, which took her three months, and mental
therapy. This was just the physical damage. Mentally she got post
traumatic stress disorder, she got anxious and depressed. Socially
Madison’s relationship with her fiance and friends were strained,
causing her more emotional pain. However, this accident did not only
affect Madison. My mother got anxiety, which has affected her heart.
She constantly has nightmares about what happened, and what could
have happened. For me personally I still think back about what I
heard in the hospital, her screaming. All this was caused because of
something she has done countless other times. Some positive things
did come out of this accident. Overall my family has grown closer
together. I got to see my sister grow, persevere, and show her
passion. I saw the love and joy she brings others, all of which
inspires me to be a better person everyday. My sister is my role
model, someone I look up to everyday. All the negative stuff that
happened to my role model, was the result of a simple mistake. The
moral of this story is to love your family everyday, and that no
simple task is worth the risk while driving.
