Drivers Not Diers

Drivers Not Diers

When I took
drivers ed classes I thought I knew all I needed to know about
driving. I read the driver’s manual, had my permit, and over 50
hours of driving behind the wheel. I thought I knew what I needed to
know, but that was not so. People think that they deserve to drive
but it really shouldn’t be an entitlement but more of an
achievement. I learned that just because I know what the rules are
and I obey them, not everyone else does. The hardest thing to learn
is to anticipate what other drivers around me are doing. Although I
found value in the driving portion of drivers ed, I found
the lessons learned during lecture to be invaluable. These lectures
showed you the raw footage of what happens when you don’t follow
the rules of the road, or the responsibilities of driving such as not
driving under the influence, while distracted or even tired. Most
people always feel nothing will ever happen to them. The reality is
it could happen to me, a friend or another person close to me. Even
if we are not the cause we can still be the victims.

Adults have busy lives, between work, family and social obligations.
We have been able to do more because of technology. However,
technology is one of the biggest distractions in life, and many don’t
put these distractions on mute when they are driving. Newer model
cars come with a lot of technology to allow hands free driving.
However most new drivers do not have the means to drive the most
current models. Drivers of older cars should be offered a rebate and
perhaps an insurance discount if they upgrade their radio and phone
in the car to prevent distracted driving.

While I have never been in an accident, nor have seen people close to
me be affected by one, I am a responsible passenger, wearing a seat
belt and not causing distractions for the drivers of the car I am in,
especially when I am with my friends. I expect my friends to be as
responsible when they are in my car. We must all do our part whether
we are a driver or a passenger.
