The road can be a dangerous place. Every year, tens of thousands of
people are affected by reckless and unsafe driving. In order to make
the road a safer place, there are some important steps that people
can take. Firstly, a more comprehensive and thorough driver’s
education should be provided to students. This drivers ed should
be offered to all students of all ages, not just prospective drivers.
Proper education informs people about the rules of the road and helps
people make safer, smarter decisions while driving; this will lead to
a safer road where fatalities are far less common.
In order to further reduce deaths on the road, a better driver’s
education should be provided. People with a deeper understanding of
the risk and consequence that comes with reckless driving will be
more likely to drive safer. In addition, the penalties for crimes
such as driving under the influence or texting while driving should
be made much harsher, to dissuade more and more people from
attempting such things. Currently, the average fine for a first-time
DUI is about $9k. If the price for driving while impaired is raised
even higher, less people will want to take such a risk.
My family is filled with responsible drivers. For eight years, we had
traveled the country in an RV; living on the road meant we had to be
safe on the road. In that time, we experienced many different types
of irresponsible drivers that made us and many others unsafe. I have
gained a first-hand understanding of the dangers posed by reckless
driving.
In my personal life, I take many steps to ensure safety for myself
and others while I’m on the road. I am mindful and alert at all
times; I keep my radio’s volume low and minimize distractions; My
phone is always set to mute and left in my pocket, or placed out of
arm’s reach; I make sure to use the proper signals to indicate when
I’ll be turning; I research the routes I’ll be taking and do me
best to understand the roads I’ll be driving on. If every driver
took a few minutes to think about these steps, the road would be a
much safer place.
