Safety over Speeding
One
of the most effective ways to remaining safe on the roads and
reducing deaths is becoming educated on driving rules. By knowing the
rules of the road, you will be able to make the right decisions while
you are driving. If you are uneducated on driving rules, you will
make dangerous and irresponsible choices. For example, if someone
wasn’t aware that left turns aren’t allowed on red lights, they
might attempt to make a left turn when they think the road is clear
and end up either hitting another vehicle or getting an expensive
ticket and a bad driving record. By being aware of the rules of the
road and applying them to your live as a driver, you will stay out of
harm’s way and keep other drivers and passengers safe.
To
reduce the amount of fatalities that are due to car accidents, people
must pledge to stay sober on the roads. Drinking and driving is one
of the worst decisions that a person could make. Between buses, ride
services like Uber and Lyft, and friends, there is always a safe
option to get home, rather than risking the lives of everyone on the
road, including your own. Additionally, phones need to be placed out
of sight while people are driving. There have been too many times
where I have witnessed people texting while driving and they are
usually always speeding and weaving outside of the lines. This
behavior is very irresponsible, as looking down for a few seconds is
enough time to cause a serious accident. Finally, people need to stop
speeding to get to their destinations. Speeding is more dangerous
than most people acknowledge. It is easy to lose control of your
vehicle and crash, and it is also easy to slam into the car in front
of you if you’re speeding and not paying attention. For this reason
alone, people need to start traveling to their destinations earlier
instead of going thirty miles over the speed limit, so they are not
late.
Unfortunately,
in the past I have been involved in a minor car accident. At the
beginning of last summer, a driver rear-ended me at a red light
because they were on their phone and not paying attention. Although
every person involved was okay, it was still extremely upsetting for
me to be in that situation due to someone else’s negligence. My car
was damaged from the impact and my back was also in enough pain to
where I had to visit a chiropractor for the rest of the summer.
Because of this experience, witnessing people behave irresponsibly
while they are driving angers me. Everyone, especially young people,
have the attitude that they are invincible and that nothing bad will
never happen to them, but I have learned that this is simply not
true. One wrong decision, like reading a text or changing a song, can
be more detrimental than expected. Even if there are no injuries,
being in an accident still costs money, time, and even increasing
insurance rates. Therefore, I choose to drive safely and demand that
my family and friends do as well.
In
order to become a better and safer driver, I strive to stay up to
date on new traffic laws that are passed and to educate my loved ones
on these rules. Additionally, I pledge to only drive when I am sober
and to not look at my phone while on the roads. I also will avoid
distractions, such as other passengers, while I am in control of a
vehicle. As I try to be a safe driver for the rest of my life, I hope
that one day every driver will make safety one of their priorities,
too.
