Safe Than Sorry
On
the road, drivers are expected to protect themselves and others from
vehicular damages and danger. However, as people become more
comfortable with being in a vehicle and as they gain more driving
experience, the once strict and high standards that they held
themselves to become lax and forgotten. The increasing amount of
lives lost due to reckless driving and lack of attention has proved
the need and importance of drivers ed. To reduce the number of
driving-related deaths, it is necessary for drivers to hold the
people in their lives accountable. Some of the most reckless drivers
are the people closest to us. It is easy to disregard the dangerous
driving habits of the people around you, especially if they have
never been in an accident or assure you of their attentiveness on the
road. However, their recklessness can lead to someone else’s
demise.
When
I was driving with a friend recently, I trusted him to be a safe
driver as I had never experienced an accident with him. My beliefs
were soon proved wrong when, that morning, he picked up his phone as
we were getting ready to stop at the stop light behind a few cars.
As he picked up his phone to read his messages, he rear-ended the car
in front of us. Luckily, we were not moving at a high speed and no
one was hurt in the encounter, but I repeatedly thought of how things
could have gone differently if he had not picked up his phone. My
experience made me believe the importance of accountability even
more. I would rather deal with a mildly irritated friend that I ask
to put down their phone than to be responsible for another person’s
life. Accountability could be the first step to safer roads.
