Thousands of ways to die in the car, shouldn’t you take control of the one thing you can control?
There
are hundreds of ways to die once you step NEAR a car. This is just
going near it. Once you get in, the number increases. Once you start
the car, the number exponentiates. Once you start driving and get
distracted by that
ring or
even to change radio stations, your life is now up to chance. Most
people don’t think about the consequences of driving like this.
It’s just one message, just one check through my Snapchat, just one
call. One turns into two and two turns into a habit that you can’t
change so easily. And a detrimental habit such as distracted driving
can cost not only your life but others as well. Knowledge is power.
In almost any literature or movie, the main character is graced with
the power of knowing and the plotline moves forward with new
information that often leads to the ultimate survival of the
character. This is what can happen to a new driver when given
drivers’ education. They are given this new information and their
story moves forward to a better ending for not only them but others
as well. Reckless driving often stems from a lack of knowledge. This
doesn’t just affect one person but it affects multiple people from
the families affected by the accident to the strangers that are in
harm’s way. There are simple steps that can be taken to reduce the
number of deaths related to driving. After learning the driver’s
handbook and passing the driver’s test, drivers should be told from
early on that driving accidents from distractions are the number one
cause of death. Cellphones are often the cause of this but that does
not limit the distraction of changing radio stations, talking to
others while driving and etc. Once the driver receives their license,
the family of the driver or even the driver’s instructor once they
pass the test should recommend that the driver takes proactive
actions to prevent distraction. We cannot rely on our self-will to
keep us out of distractions way. Many teens believe that their will
to not touch the phone is greater than the temptation. This is,
however, simply not true for many people. Instead, we can encourage
drivers to put their phones insides the center console or the glove
compartment to keep it out of sight. This is a common and simple way
of deterring any temptation that might come during driving to look at
the phone. Drivers should also take further action by turning off
their phones or at least turning off their sound to ensure that no
temptation of the
ring
will be heard and distract us from driving safely. This will not lead
to ultimate heaven for all of the drivers out there, but this will
create a safer environment for all of us. There are too many things
that can lead to death that are NOT in our control, but if there are
things we can do and take control of, then shouldn’t we do all in
our power to prevent it?
