Education
Saves Lives

Everyday
there are new drivers on the road, and it is always crucial for them
to know the importance of road safety. The first step to road safety
is to be properly educated from drivers ed as well as
behind-the-wheel experience. This involves learning about prevention
methods, what if’s, as well as general knowledge of proper driving
and rules placed for our safety. People say, “education is key”
and it is truly demonstrated in this example. People are ignorant of
the large numbers of deaths related to cars and take very few
preventative measures to avoid it. Proper education will relieve this
ignorance and bring awareness to this issue, inspiring people to make
a change in their lives as well as the people around them. This
includes knowing statistics like the ones presented on this website
to show the importance of road safety.

There
are many steps that may reduce the number of deaths that were related
to driving. Education is the first step, then it is up to the driver
to make the right decisions. This involves avoiding distractions such
as cell phones, music, and/or other people in the car. A person must
have their full focus on the road and their surrounding environment.
Knowing your vehicle, ensuring it is in good condition to drive along
with always wearing a seatbelt are the first step for safe driving.
In addition, pedestrians and anyone who is on or near a road for any
reason must stay aware of their surroundings, this means ensuring
that a car is stopped before crossing, wearing visible clothing,
and/or a form of communication is exchanged with drivers around you.

In
the past I was involved in a car accident that was a result of icy
roads. It was a scary time, but since the driver, my father, was
focused on the road, the accident was less damaging then it could
have been. I have also been in several cars where people go on their
phone, listen to loud music, and/or eat a distracting snack. All
these occurrences are big distractions that can cause the driver to
lose focus on the road and one day may result in an accident.

At
times I have seen people who listen to loud music, singing along, or
eating food on the go. I can improve my driving by avoiding those
things to ensure I am not distracted as I am driving. I can help
other people to be safe drivers by influencing them to avoid
distractions while driving by voicing my opinions on their actions. I
may also help to educate people on the statistics, putting emphasis
on how crucial safe driving is to avoid these dangerous situations.
The best way for there to be safer driving is through education from
one person to the next. The more people that realize the extent of
the problem, the more people will be motivated to change.
