Being
an educated driver is extremely important as it is what decides how
safe you are on the road, which can ultimately prevent your death and
that of loved ones and the stranger behind or in front of you. An
educated driver is always aware of their surroundings; this means
knowing what is physically around you and knowing the laws and
regulations wherever you are. For instance, knowing that there is a
major intersection ahead and it is in the aftermath of a severe
snowstorm would tell an educated driver that they may want to try and
take it slower and with more caution. Also knowing what to do when
something goes wrong can save your life and that of the people around
you.
Some
steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to
driving is knowing your surroundings; like if there is a school
nearby and if they are letting out or beginning. Another step is
making sure that the car you are driving is up to inspection and in
good shape as to not break down or pose any dangers to anyone around
you. A very crucial step would be always being in the right state to
drive. You cannot drive while under any type of physical influence;
whether that be alcohol or medication. Knowing you can be alert and
focused while driving improves your ability to drive and therefore
making you a safer driver.
I
have never been in an accident or been in a car involved in an
accident but have seen friends driving irresponsibly. I personally
make the choice to not drive with them and put myself behind the
wheel over friends as then I know I am in control of where the
vehicle is going and what is happening. That way I know that if
something were to happen, I don’t have to worry about what the other
person’s decisions are going to be. I know what I would do in a
situation and this makes me more comfortable behind the wheel,
increasing my safety on the road.
Steps
I can take to be a safer and better driver, as well as help others be
better drivers is knowing the conditions out. If I know we are about
to get a snowstorm that will make the road conditions somewhat
dangerous, I will make sure I have the proper gear equipped to my
vehicle and that I am doing all in my power to prevent an accident.
Another step I can take to be safer is having to hands on the wheel
always. By having hands on the wheel, I can be ready to react to
situations and possibly avoid an accident of some type. It gives me
and other people who drive with both hands better control of the
vehicle. Keeping distractions like cellphones and trinkets out of my
line of sight would also be a great step for me and others in
becoming safer drivers.
