Importance
of Drivers ed – Blake Torgerson

Drivers
Education is extremely important especially in today’s day and age.
With countless new drivers getting their licenses every day, and
todays society that requires some sort of vehicular transport daily
to get food, get to work or even to have a family vacation. Vehicular
and drivers ed has never been so important and necessary
before in history.

Drivers
education is extremely necessary in reducing and preventing deaths in
vehicular accidents. The more we educate and understand about
driving, the more we can apply to actual on the road safety. Looking
at the statistic on the DMV website, from 2005 to 2012, deaths on
highways from accidents has decreased by about ten thousand. Using
this statistic, we can assume that new technology for cars and new
ways of teaching how to drive had been developed. We as a nation have
solid evidence that drivers ed reduces total deaths across
highways, and most likely other roads as well.

Certain
things like putting your phone away or powering it off can get rid of
distractions and make you much more of a cautious and attentive
driver. Making sure schools can offer a drivers ed. Program, or even
making these programs more accessible to the public can also help
make the roads a safer place. Another Idea is educating people on
efficiency while sleep deprived. Driving while tired or having a lack
of sleep is extremely dangerous to not only yourself, but the other
drivers around you. If we can educate the public more often about how
certain things affect driving more often, perhaps we would see an
increase in safety and decrease in accidents and deaths.

An
experience that I have that relates to unsafe driving is something I
have learned a very valuable lesson from. My mom was driving me home
from hockey practice one night and we had come to a stoplight which
we were supposed to turn right at. We were behind one car and my mom
had pulled her phone out to check Facebook. She thought the light had
turned green and started to accelerate her car. She ended up rear
ending the car in front of us. Luckily there was no damage, and
everyone was alright. To the day every time I think I can check my
phone quick I remember what had happened and I keep it tucked away.

Some
steps I can take to be a better driver is putting my phone on my
hands free car mount, make sure to wear a seatbelt, make sure
passengers are not distracting, make sure I have gotten a proper
amount of sleep before getting behind the wheel, and last but not
least always being attentive to my surroundings while driving.

In
conclusion drivers ed is extremely necessary in today’s day
and age and it should be a much bigger issue that needs to be brought
to light more often by not just the media, but by all Americans.
