Take Life By The Wheel, But Remember to Watch for Traffic Signs

Imagine your
drivers ed class in school. 20 to 30 peers around you, with
tired, drooping eyes, barely listening to the droning gym teacher,
who’s reading straight out of the Driver’s Manual. Driving
accidents are one of the lead causes of American deaths. One of the
first, and most important steps, to reducing these tragic fatalities
is to better educate our students about the consequences reckless
driving can have. While I have never personally lost anyone in a car
accident, and I count myself blessed to say such, I know just how
many people in our country have their lives snipped short much too
early. If we impressed upon students, with more interactive and
engaging styles of learning drivers ed, the importance of
safe and defensive driving, then we would start to see improvement in
reducing the number of deaths related to driving. Some other
important steps, we as a country could commit to together, for the
sake of our drivers, would be to increase the age at which teenagers
receive their license and enforce more instructed driving before this
age. If students were better taught about shielded driving
techniques, then our drivers as a whole would be safer. Personally, I
can make sure that I am well-rested, predictable, avoiding road
distractions, and obeying all traffic laws. If everyone implemented
these small but significant steps to our driving, if we came
together, as a country, to protect our citizens, the same way we come
together to protest war or shield our citizens from famine and
poverty, we could save our citizens, one driver at a time.
