In the Blink of an Eye
In
the blink of an eye, you can go from texting your best friend about
the latest high school drama to pleading for life as your demolished
car hugs your body tight. This description may sound morbid, however
incidents such as this happen around the world constantly. Driver’s
education is extremely important in reducing the number of deaths
that occur as a result of motor vehicle accidents. Research has shown
that teenagers who have taken drivers ed courses are less
likely to be involved in accidents or receive traffic violations
during their first two years of driving. This is especially important
because fatality rates and teenager crashes are most frequent between
the ages of 16-18, therefore a reduction in these occurrences would
significantly reduce the amount of deaths.
Reducing the fatality rate as a result of car crashes can be
accomplished by implementing simple rules that can create a safer
environment while driving. For example, insisting that all passengers
wear their seatbelts, never driving while under the influence of a
substance, driving at the speed limit, and focusing solely on the
road. Seatbelts actually save lives and can be the difference between
life and death. They hold passengers in place if an accident occurs,
and not wearing one means that the passenger will continue to travel
forwards at the same speed of the vehicle. Driving under the
influence is also a major contributor to fatal teen crashes. It is
virtually impossible to drive properly when the brain is warped
because of a foreign substance. This can cause people to drive
significantly over the speed limit and lose focus on the road, both
which will lead to a possibly fatal accident.
I am
grateful that I have never had the experience of being in a major car
accident, nor have I witnessed any of my friends or family driving
recklessly. I was raised to always obey traffic laws because they
keep everyone safe and reduce the number of car incidents that occur.
I have always surrounded myself with those who act responsibly and
recognize the dangers of disregarding safety rules.
I
can continue to be a safe driver by obeying all traffic laws
regardless of the circumstances. I believe that all motor vehicle
laws were implemented for the sole purpose of keeping everyone safe.
With these principles in mind, I can motivate others to be safe
drivers as well.
