Establishing a Safe Driving Culture

I
believe that the importance of drivers ed is that it
teaches individuals the prominent risks that exist when driving and
how dangerous driving has severe consequences. Driving education is
aimed at exercising precaution when behind the wheel and being aware
of the safety neighboring drivers and pedestrians. Once you put
yourself behind the wheel and begin driving the focus truly moves
away from you and should be all on those whose lives can be impacted
by our driving decisions. Drivers ed can help reduce the
number of driving related deaths by allowing new drivers to
experience the reality of what a safe driving experience is instead
of driving clueless. Additionally, it can also aid in reducing death
tolls by teaching drivers how to properly react in all situations and
how to make split second decisions should danger arise.

In
order to fully implement safety on our roads we must have more
programs implemented other than basic driver ed courses. A system
must be put in place that provides initiative and pushes drivers to
make the correct decisions behind the wheel. My proposition includes
launching a community lead campaign in all cities that is led by the
citizens to fight the prominent reckless driving culture that is
implemented within our society as a way to create this initiative.
This is a program that is locally driven and not government driven, a
program created by the people for the people. Our program will
include having those impacted by reckless driving that have lost
loved ones attending our driving education sessions having impacted
people and people who lost their loved ones come out to driving
education sessions and tell their stories. Another step needed to
reduce the number of deaths is setting zero tolerance policies that
will have serious consequences for violators. For examples: Georgia’s
2019 texting and driving zero tolerance law, these tough measures
will ensure that drivers to obey the law or suffer the consequences.

From
personal experience, I have lived moments in which a family member
has made the tragic decision to drive extremely irresponsible. On the
positive side, no accident occurred nor was anybody hurt but this
individual record and legality status were paused for a few months
due to this accident.

In
conclusion, it would be hypocritical of me to give advice without
pointing out how I myself can improve as a driver as well. Some steps
that I can take to become a better driver include being patient with
other drivers, attentively looking at my mirrors when turning and
leaving more space between cars. These steps will require practice
and effort but I will not stop until these safe habits are formed and
until my driving can be the example I set for others. Overall, the
best thing that I can do is to raise awareness to those behind the
wheel and encourage others to be precautious when driving.
