The Importance of Drivers Ed in Keeping Roadway’s Safe
The
Importance of Drivers ed in Keeping Roadway’s Safe
At
some point in everyone’s life they have taken one or more driver’s
education courses in order to receive their license. Driver’s
education courses supply the needed information and schooling for
every person to go out and successfully receive their driver’s
license after the proper and necessary training. In this essay I will
discuss the impact drivers ed has had on my life and how I
feel we can improve the safety of roadway travel for everyone on the
roads.
Driver’s
education has many benefits in reducing the number of deaths as a
result of driving. I believe drivers ed can prepare new
drivers for life out on the roadway. Drivers ed is usually
a two weeklong course that teaches new drivers all they need to know
about safely navigating the roads. Drivers ed courses cover
everything from the very basics of driving to specific situations
that you may encounter in your career as a safe driver. I believe
drivers ed does reduce the number of deaths as a result of
driving. There are many lessons that were instilled in me during
drivers ed that I use every time I pilot a vehicle. The
most basic way drivers ed prevents driver related deaths is
by teaching participants to be defensive drivers. This means not only
paying attention to your personal driving but that you must keep a
keen eye on the driver’s around you in order to keep safe.
The
next way drivers ed prevents the rise of deaths related to
roadway travel is by showing students what can happen if they do not
obey the rules of the road. For example, I remember being told
stories and shown numerous videos of horrible accidents that were
caused by unsafe driving. The videos and stories instilled a healthy
fear in me and many of my classmates that we will remember always.
These videos and stories showed not only new driver accidents but
accidents that involved people who had been driving for years. This
showed us that accidents happen to everyone and that without driver’s
education courses we would largely unprepared for life on the road.
Lastly, drivers ed classes or at least the one I
participated in brought a police officer in for a visit to educate us
and answer any questions we may have had. I believe this works to
prevent roadway accidents because it educates students about the
consequences they can face if they are involved in a car accident.
Lastly,
Drivers ed reduces the number of car accident related
death’s by making students participate in behind the wheel lessons.
These are lessons where the student drives on the roadway with a
certified instructor to gain hands on experience with driving on the
road. I believe this works to reduce the number of car accident
related deaths because it allows the student to use all the lessons
and skills, they learned in their in-class instruction. These behind
the wheel lessons are split into sections, starting with
backroads/neighborhoods and ending with highway driving in order to
prepare the student for their driver’s test. This also forces the
student driver to use defensive driving skills in order to keep
themselves, the instructor, and other drivers safe. Finally, I
believe behind the wheel lessons can be proven to prepare new drivers
for the road and in turn reduce the number of accidents they may be
involved in.
Next,
I believe there are many steps that can be taken to reduce the number
of deaths caused by driving. For example, as mentioned above driver’s
education has many benefits that can be transferred into causing the
reduction of driving related deaths. Another, step that could reduce
the number of driving related deaths would be driver remediation
courses. These would be given to people who have been in multiple
accidents or who have received multiple tickets for larger driving
related offenses. Lastly, penalties such as fines, points on your
driver’s license, and jail time. A combination of these could be
created for repeat offenders in order to try and prevent a repetition
of or increase in accidents. In conclusion, these are just a few
steps that could be taken reduce the number of driving related deaths
caused by accidents.
I
myself have been involved in a one car accident where I hit a
mailbox, thankfully no one was injured, and I have since learned from
this mistake. However, I have also experienced my friends and some
family drive recklessly or irresponsibly. For example, some members
of my family and some of my friends have developed the unsafe habit
of texting and driving. I believe these are all experiences that we
can learn from and that will make us better and safer drivers in the
future.
Lastly,
I believe I can take many steps to be a safer driver and teach others
to be safer drivers. For example, I am working towards breaking my
habit of texting and driving in order to keep not only myself and my
passengers safe but to keep other drivers safe. Also, with my sister
being a new driver I am working on teaching her how to be safe on the
road and am hoping she will not pick up the habit of texting and
driving.
In
conclusion, I believe drivers ed provides many benefits and
will continue to produce safe and productive drivers and members of
society. By teaching people how be defensive drivers I believe
drivers ed will work to make the roads a safer place for
everyone.
