Ever
since I began driving, my parents instilled in me that a car is a
weapon. A weapon greater than those used in war, and one that can
instantly change not only my life, but others in the matter of a
second. Not that this information was used to scare me but to
influence my choices on the road. The potential of someone’s life
ending because of my reckless decisions is a situation I will never
allow myself to get into.
In
order to take precautions into this measure, my family decided it was
best to sign me up for defensive driving classes and an online
program that highlights safe driving choices. Along with taking extra
instruction time driving in snowy weather due to the unpredictability
of Colorado. These excess classes are not mandatory, but should
become so among all new drivers. The information learned is too
essential to driving. So much so, that I believe I would have been in
an accident had I not known what I know. Knowledge is the greatest
gift possible, so why not use it? With the implementation of more in
depth requirements in order to get onto the road, would result in
higher educated drivers and thus less fatalities.
On
a late snowy Tuesday night, my friends and I were leaving a
basketball game separately that we had just performed at. The roads
were becoming worse as the night carried on. As I traveled down the
road I saw one of my friend’s cars lose traction and drive up onto
the curb into the grass. And another spin out backwards into oncoming
traffic. Because they were new drivers, unaware of how to handle the
snow, resulted in potential serious injury. While I had the knowledge
of driving in icy conditions I was able to not only help them but
also get home safely. Simply by just knowing a few more precautions
to handle certain conditions, would have prevented those dangerous
situations.
While
there are some circumstances that are uncontrollable, many are able
to be avoided. With extended knowledge of the hazards of the road and
how to accurately manage them, new drivers would be able to implement
their techniques to keep everyone safe. Due to my experience within
these classes I should share what I know with others in order to help
the spreading of information. When helping others I can also learn
driving tips they know that I don’t. Spreading knowledge is the
greatest tool we as humanity have and we should use it to our
advantage to spread safety as our priority among all.
