To Swerve or Not To Swerve: The Importance of Driver Safety
In
most states, at the age of 15 teenagers begin their journey of
driving. They must take a class on driver safety and understand the
rules of the road to obtain their permit. At the age of 16, those
teenagers must be able to drive, abiding the rules of the road, with
an instructor in the car or else they will not receive their license.
If an individual does not understand or know the proper way to drive
the vehicle or know the rules that go along with it, they put
themselves and everyone else on the road at risk,. That is why it is
important to be educated when it comes to driving. Knowing what all
the signs mean, following the set speed limits, and knowing the rules
that follow the responsibility when it comes to driving. If they do
not understand, they could become and reckless driver and do harm to
themselves and other innocent drivers.
In
order to reduce the number of deaths per year when it comes to
driving, I believe that when an individual has to renew their
license, they must retake the driving test and written test. That
would ensure that they are still following the rules provided and
also allow the DMV to see whether or not they should still be able to
obtain that much responsibility. With the new law against texting and
driving, I believe if the police enforce it then there will be less
deaths on the road. This is because many student drivers text and
drive and it takes their focus off the road, leading them to get into
accidents. If their ability to text and drive is taken, they will
have to focus ahead of them keeping them more aware of their
surroundings.
I
have experienced a car accident before. A man was texting and driving
and rear-ended me and my friend at a stoplight. He was not paying
attention to the road in front of him because he believed the text
was more important than looking at the road ahead. Thankfully there
were no severe injuries, but that man realized his mistake and
apologized for doing so and vowed to stop texting and driving. Many
people, when bad things happen to them, realize their mistakes and
try not make that same mistake twice. If an individual got pulled
over for speeding, the likelihood of them speeding again is slim.
To
better myself as a driver, I could take a defensive driving class to
allow me to be prepared for those drivers who pay no attention to the
other vehicles around them. When it comes to helping other people
become better drivers, I could ensure that when driving in the car
with a friend who is not abiding by the law, that I correct them and
make sure they know the possible result of their mistakes. Everyone
makes mistakes, just don’t make them twice.
