Although
the motor vehicle fatality rate has steadily decreased over the
years, there is more that can be done to prevent motor vehicle
accidents and deaths. I strongly believe that motor vehicle
fatalities have to do a lot with whether or not the drivers are
educated / have taken drivers ed courses. According to an
article written in 2017, drivers ed is associated with a lower
incidence of crashes and convictions. Crashes were reduced by 4.3%
and convictions were reduced by about 40%. Additionally, these
numbers can only go up with the help of increased drivers ed.
But overall drivers ed courses reduce crash risk.

Driving
is a prominent part of our culture today. Driving and cars have been
assimilated into our culture and that means that there are steps that
our country needs to take to further motor vehicle fatality
awareness. In my opinion, I think that a very important way to reduce
the number of deaths related to driving is to require every person
who gets their license to go through not only a course, but a driving
death prevention seminar. Hearing the emotional stories from those
that motor vehicle fatalities have impacted will give an emotional
connection to safe driving.

Although
I have not experienced a car accident or irresponsible driving in my
life, a very important person in my life was impacted. My uncle Steve
is the reason why this application intrigued me. This man lived like
every day was his last. He lived, and he sure did love. He was happy.
It wasn’t his fault that he isn’t on this planet anymore. It
wasn’t his fault that his life was taken from him. It was an
irresponsible driver’s fault. My uncle was stopped at a stop sign
waiting his turn to cross the road when a teen driver struck his car.
The teen that hit my uncle was texting and driving, and this teen
took my uncle’s life way too soon.

It
is horrible, however personal stories like this are the only way to
get through to those that drive irresponsibly – Hearing from people
who have been directly affected. In high school, we were required to
listen to various stories like that our Freshman and Sophomore years,
prior to getting our permits or licenses. I think it was a very
effective way to get through to us young drivers that we are not the
only ones on the road and that defensive driving is also another
priority. Overall, I believe that drivers ed is one of the most
important requirements for anyone driving on the road.
