Preventing trauma
Road
safety and Driver awareness are big issues for me for very deep
personal reasons. Those reasons begin on the morning of October
twenty-seventh two thousand and eleven. On that fateful morning, I
woke and my aunt had made me breakfast that day was special it was
her birthday. At the time my mother, sister, and I had been living
with my aunt and uncle for about three years and would continue to
live there for around four more. I and my sister finished our
breakfast that morning and said goodbye to our aunt and wished her a
happy birthday as we got in the car with our mother to go off to
school. As we were making our way to school I played on my Nintendo
DS and everything was going normally until at a four-way stop a car
kept going and swerved and almost hit us. The exact details of what
happened are a little bit fuzzy but what I do remember is the car
flipping over three times and my mother ending up flat on the
sidewalk with a broken spine. The next few hours were a scary blur of
ambulance rides hospital hallways and medical examinations.
Thankfully, in the end, my sister and I were fine, but our mother
required months of physical therapy in order to recover but after
months of it she was able to walk and move around normally again.
This event will always stick with me due to its traumatic nature. It
really helped shape the way I look at driving and road safety in
general. The event was traumatic and horrible yes, but thanks to it I
now know to never ever be distracted on the road since that could
cause some other little boy to have to see his mother laying on the
sidewalk with a broken spine. The best way to ensure that fewer or
perhaps even no people have to go through such a traumatic event as I
did is to encourage and require road safety. Drivers should at all
times be aware of their surroundings and never ever under any
circumstances look at their phone or engage in any other activities
that can result in them being distracted from the road. Being
distracted even briefly can have life-altering consequences that can
cause irreversible damages both physically and mentally to innocent
people. That’s why whenever I’m driving I always make sure I pay
attention to my surroundings and never look at my phone or get
distracted in any other way. By doing this I’m making sure that no
one else has to be as scared and afraid as I was on that day.
