Becoming a Safe Driver

Becoming a Safe Driver

When
a person makes the decision to finally get their licenses, and open
the next door in their life, everything falls into place during their
driving lessons. They form their good habits and their bad habits.
For many new drivers, they really begin to develop their driving
style during those first few lessons. The new driver finally has a
way to be in total control. But with that control, comes a lot of
responsibility. They are responsible for themselves and those around
them. If the driving instructor can identify a bad habit of the
student driver and work to eliminate it or help them turn it into a
good habit, that could potentially save lives in the future. While it
may not seem obvious at the time, driving instructors being able to
identify a bad habit, such as not doing a complete stop at a right
turn on a red light, could potentially save the lives of the driver,
any passengers, and pedestrians.

As
I stated previously, I believe that our habits define us as a driver.
As a child, I grew up next to a busy highway, so it was ingrained
into my head that I have to look both ways before crossing the
street. Now, as a driver, I always look both ways even before I get
to the stop sign. I am constantly looking left and right as I make a
turn. It is habits like those that I think should be taught
thoroughly in school. Also, as cell phones become more universal, I
think that kids even as young as elementary school should be taught
to never have their phone out when they are driving, or that their
parents should never text and drive.

Neither
I or anyone in my immediate family has ever been in a severe car
accident. But I remember years ago, my grandma’s best friend was
killed in a car accident. I remember going to my grandma’s house to
see her quiet and devastated, which was very unlike her upbeat and
talkative self. I never really knew her friend, but I saw the effect
the death had on her. Since then, the only irresponsible kind of
driving that I see is people texting and driving. My friends,
brother, and my mom all do it. I have never been in an accident, but
when the driver is texting too, I always feel uneasy.

I
think I should speak up to people texting and driving. If I feel
unsafe while driving with them, I need to speak up and tell them to
put their phone away. As a new driver, I need to be more aware of my
surroundings. I have to be constantly looking around and making sure
I drive the speed limit. If I drive safely, then that is one more car
that other people don’t have to worry about.
