2020 Drivers ed Essay Contest

I
believe that drivers ed is one of the most important factors
that go into making a safe driver. Drivers ed teaches new
drivers the basics of the rules of the road and the power that new
drivers hold in their vehicles. Drivers ed can help to reduce
the number of deaths by providing education on the fundamentals of
driving. This will help to create safer, more aware drivers that
will have pre-existing knowledge of driving before they are alone
behind the wheel. Having educated people driving and also as
passengers will help to reduce the number of deaths because they will
be more intuitive of their surroundings and they can help to drive
safely and keep others in the car safe and spread their knowledge to
others as well.

I believe that
schools should require their students to take a semester-long
drivers ed class as part of their curriculum. By requiring
this course, all young drivers will learn the basics of driving, and
this education will follow them throughout their lives. It will
reduce the number of deaths by producing more aware new drivers, and
also more aware passengers who can help to keep their driver focused
on the right things.

Fortunately, I have
never experienced being in a car accident, but I have close friends
who have. One of my best friends was in a car accident about a year
ago. This car accident was caused by distracted driving. She was
lost, and she called her friend for directions, and while her friend
was telling her where to go, she ran a red light and crashed into
another driver. My friend never took a drivers ed class.
I believe that this car crash was partly caused by her lack of
education on how dangerous distracted driving can be. If she would
have taken the course, I believe that this accident could have been
prevented and that she would’ve made a better choice at that
moment. This car accident enlightened me on how dangerous distracted
driving can be, and that my life could be gone in a split second if I
were to make the same decision that my friend made.

I can take steps to
further my drivers ed by refreshing my memory every so
often in order to keep up on changing rules and laws regarding safe
driving practices. I can also be an active passenger when I am in
the car with others, especially when they are not practicing safe
driving habits. I can help them to become safer by educating them on
how to become a safer driver, and this will benefit them as well as
all other drivers on the road. Drivers ed is such an important
factor in having safer drivers on the road, and I believe that it can
save lives.
