With Power Comes Responsibility

I
took Drivers Ed. During my sophomore year of high school, prior to
taking it, I was very paranoid to drive and worried I would end up in
a fatal accident. Albeit, after I finished the course and got my
license, I felt comfortable driving and now I have virtually no fear
at all when I ignite a car engine thanks to Drivers Ed. I think
that spending a couple months everyday on a course and just going
over the fundamentals reduces the death toll of driving substantially
because you become numb to the feel of driving with others and making
certain maneuvers behind the wheel.

I
believe one thing that could be done to reduce the number of
automobile related deaths is just to be as vigilant as possible; when
I drive, I make sure that I know my surroundings by checking the
mirrors consistently, driving at a reasonable speed, watching for
road signs, not being distracted by anything, and most importantly:
staying patient and calm with other drivers. If you’re ever under
the influence, find someone else who’d be willing to drive you to
your destination or call an uber or a lyft, even if you may feel
sober enough, it’s always best to just take the safest path.

I’ve
been in one accident in the few years that I’ve been driving, it
happened when I first started driving and what had happened was there
was a car in front of me and we were both in line trying to make a
right at an intersection, I was looking left to see the flow of cars
coming our way and once there were a few and it was safe to make a
right, I didn’t realize that the person in front was still
stationary and I had rear-ended their car. It was a clumsy mistake on
my behalf and I’ve reflected on that incident every time I drive, I
always make sure that being vigilant includes looking forward before
I ever let my foot off the brake no matter the circumstances.

All I can say is, be as aware
as you can possibly be when driving because while it can be a
jubilant occasion to drive and enjoy yourself, it is a dangerous task
and requires the utmost attention. If you’re ever impaired, find a
different way of getting somewhere that doesn’t involve you in the
driver’s seat because it could save the lives of both you and I.
