Driving For Life

Driving
For Life

I
am fortunate to only have ever had two encounters with driving
accidents, once as a passenger and once as a driver. When I was six
or seven years old my dad was driving me home on an icy winter day.
As we were heading up a hill someone else was heading down.
Unfortunately, both of our cars slid and we were unable to avoid a
collision. However, neither party was seriously injured. In addition
to this accident, I also have gotten into one very minor accident in
the past year and a half that I have been driving. As I was pulling
into a parking spot I realized it was too tight but a car had pulled
up behind me so I was unable to back up. I ended up just barely
clipping the bumper of the car next to me.

One
of the most important parts of drivers ed is not teaching
you how to drive but also how to listen to your instincts and react
to situations that can be life-threatening. I am thankful that
drivers ed was able to teach me how to react when there are other
reckless drivers and car malfunctions. This has allowed me to feel
significantly sager when I am out on the road and I encounter
inevitable dangerous driving situations.

While
it would be amazing if we could completely eliminate driving
accidents as a whole, that does not appear to be something that is
highly probable of happening. The importance of drivers ed is
to educate drivers on how to not only take care of themselves but
also how to watch out for others on the road who aren’t making wise
decisions. We are unable to control other people’s actions but we
are able to teach our new generations of drivers how to react to
these drivers to limit fatalities on the roads.
