Be
a Discerned Driver

In
our world today, transportation (particularly driving), has become
essential and extremely beneficial for each individual. As our
population grows, our cities grow as well, making the ability to
drive a bigger want to everyone. Although many people yearn for their
license, many people have little care for all of the rules of the
road, disregard them, or do not know them even after they receive
their license. Ignoring, disregarding, and being oblivious to the
rules of the road are increasingly more common, and action towards
ensuring that all drivers are educated is extremely important and
essential. It is important to know the importance of driving in order
to reduce deaths, as well as the steps and precautions to take to
ensure a decline in deaths and accidents. It is also important to
realize personal accidents and irresponsibility’s, as well as steps
to do in order to ensure that you are a safe and good driver.

With
the growing number of people receiving and having a license, the
government has created many ways and systems that contribute to
ensuring that all drivers (old and new), are well educated in the
rules of the road. Through classes, simulations, tests, and videos of
possible dangerous scenarios and real life events, drivers have
become more educated and aware. Education of drivers helps to reduce
deaths caused by driving, for both the driver and the people around
the driver, due to the awareness that has been instilled in them.
Having the awareness reduces deaths, as citizens know what
precautions to take and how to handle situations properly. For
example, in bad weather (like snowstorms), people know to drive
slower, use wipers if needed, switch gears if needed, etc. Another
example is with regards to stop lights. Many people have difficulty
in determining whether they stop or keep going at a yellow light, but
with resources (like classes, tests, etc.) provided, people have
learned how to handle situations like that, helping in the decline of
deaths caused by driving.

All
around the world, deaths are caused by driving in many different
ways; some ways include impaired driving, distracted driving (by
people in the car, phones, and more), weather conditions, etc. In
knowing this, there are many steps that can be taken to reduce
driving related deaths. Some steps that can be and that are being
done to help reduce deaths related to driving are laws (like
alcohol/drug consumption), driving classes, in car driving lessons,
online tests, driving rule booklets, videos of the dangers and risks
of not knowing the rules, and potentially having driving rule
reinforcement packages or classes every few years. All of the steps
would and do help to reduce deaths, as it keeps people reminded of
everything that they need to know. It also reminds people of what the
result of their carelessness could be, resulting in people driving
safer for the safety of everyone.

Car
crash deaths are possibly one of the most experienced causes of death
in our society. In my lifetime I have witnessed many car crashes with
regards to drivers and/or pedestrians around me, but I have not
personally been in a car accident myself. The idea that my family,
friends, or I could be in a car accident at any point, is an
extremely scary thought, as that is not anything that I would wish
upon anyone, due to the consequences and risks. Fortunately I have
not been in a car accident, but I have sadly witnessed friends and
family driving irresponsibly. Majority of the time, when this occurs,
it is when they are neglecting to pay attention due to their emotions
(happy, sad, annoyed), or that it is being done subconsciously and
continuously as a cause of the habits that they have developed.
Sadly, irresponsible driving is something that occurs all too often,
and is something that will be a challenge to truly change. As a
society, I believe that we are doing a good job at starting off with
enforcing responsible driving with new drivers, but I believe that we
need to create a way of making sure that new drivers make the skills
taught to them when learning how to drive a habit, instead of
becoming careless and adopting lazy, irresponsible habits.

As
addressed earlier, there are many steps that can be taken in reducing
deaths caused by driving; additionally there are many steps that can
be taken to ensure that one is a better and safer driver. To ensure
that I am a better and safer driver there are a variety of steps that
I can, do, and should take. One step that I can take in order to be a
better and safer driver is to make sure that I am alert. This step
would help me to be a better and safer driver as it would mean that I
recognize what is going on around me. I would automatically and
subconsciously realize when pedestrians are around, when someone (in
other cars) are moving or turning into my lane, etc. Another step
that I can take is to make sure that I am refreshing my memory on
road rules. This is extremely important as it will help me to
remember the road rules, as well as keep me conscious of my actions
on the road. Lastly, a step that I can take to make me a better and
safer driver is to continuously keep myself updated on the many risks
and real life occurrences of driving. I believe that this step will
help to keep myself and my diving in line as I will be well aware of
what could happen if I become an irresponsible driver.

Ignoring,
disregarding, and being oblivious to the rules of the road has become
more common in society, and action towards ensuring that all drivers
are educated is essential to society. There is an enormous
responsibility of many people in Canada and the world, in recognizing
and spreading the importance of being a discerned driver in every
sense. In knowing the importance of educated driving to reduce
deaths, steps to take in an attempt to reduce deaths caused by
driving, realizing your personal habits (of yourself and others close
to you), and steps that oneself can take to keep themselves a better
and safer driver. In our world today, it is increasingly more
important that we are aware and educated with regards to all aspects
of driving, as people are always in a rush to get places. Many times,
the fast pace of life consumes our thoughts and distracts us from the
small yet important things that keep everyone safe (that being road
rules and road safety). Educating ourselves is the first step to
making a change in keeping the roads safe. Through doing this, we
will be helping ourselves, but will consequently create a chain
reaction that will eventually keep everyone on the roads safe.
