Doing My Part To Save Lives Behind The Wheel

Driving is one of the most dangerous activities on earth. Many people
do not realize the power they possess when behind the wheel of a
vehicle. The repetition of driving causes our sense of awareness to
decrease significantly and this leads to very serious and preventable
casualties. There are several easy solutions to this problem that are
within reach of every driver.

Both of my parents have had successful careers in the emergency
services. My dad was a fire marshal, paramedic, and deputy sheriff.
My mom was also a paramedic. They have had numerous talks with my
brother and I about the power we hold when driving. We hold the lives
of everyone on the road around us in our hands. The vehicles we drive
are capable of taking a life. This essay is not intended to strike
fear into drivers, rather to raise awareness to the effects of
vehicular crashes and ways to prevent them. My parents being in the
line of work they are has allowed them to be around countless car
accidents. They have concluded that many accidents are caused by
complacency and a lack pf awareness to the road around us.

Drivers ed is a tool that ahs been developed to help drivers
understand their part in preventing crashes. I myself have taken
drivers ed and can relate to how boring it is. It feels as if it will
never end and seems to provide information that feels useless.
However, the information that it provides is very useful and very
important. In these courses’ drivers are taught how to properly
driver and how to avoid accidents in numerous situations. Things such
as how to place your hands on the steering wheel and how far to stay
away from the driver ahead of you are things that seem ridiculous
when looking at them on a computer screen. They still feel ridiculous
when driving on most occasions, but when but in a situation in which
an accident is fast approaching can be a matter of life or death. I
will not lie and say I follow these rules at all times but after
going through drivers ed I see the importance of them.

All of these rules have been put in place for a reason. Law
enforcement have been trained to enforce these rules in order to keep
everyone on the road as safe as possible. No one likes receiving a
ticket, but they are necessary for our safety. Drivers ed has been
set up to protect all citizens. I believe I am a better driver after
taking this course.

As a driver I feel that being aware of my surroundings at all times
helps to make my drive safer at all times. This does not add any time
to my drive or inconvenience me in anyway. This simple task can help
prevent me from being injured or injuring others around me. If every
driver took this same approach the number of accidents would drop
drastically across the nation. Simply paying attention to changing
road conditions around me as a driver can lead to safer, more
effective travel for everyone around me.
