As
a subject within the school system, drivers ed presents a
unique challenge to both the administration and student body of a
school. Due to the limited period of time in which a young person can
safely and legally learn about the proper technique and the myriad of
rules and things to consider when driving, the quality of driver’s
education must be excellent. Even with the highest possible quality
of education, however, it is impossible to completely prevent all
motor vehicle accidents, and oftentimes, those who are inexperienced
may be the cause of accidents. While doing away with car accidents as
a whole is an unrealistic premise, by teaching aspiring drivers how
to drive in a safer manner, the number of accidents and subsequent
deaths may be reduced.

Driver’s
education is an exciting class to be enrolled in, as it represents a
new opportunity for freedom, and is a major step towards adulthood.
While exciting, it is also important to recognize the seriousness of
the course. Drivers ed is far more than simply teaching
students the rules of the road, in certain cases, it may also teach
new drivers how to save their lives as well as those around them.
Even basic concepts such as looking both ways and understanding
yielding can prevent major injury or even death. Those who simply
gloss over these concepts are putting themselves and others in
serious danger, as incalculable numbers of people, including young
children or entire families, have been lost to reckless drivers.

Speaking
as a student who has recently been through the established driver’s
education system, the classes themselves are incredibly thorough in
educating students in the rules in regulations of the road. However,
where I believe the system could be improved is my by taking
additional time on the road itself experiencing driving with other
drivers. If more time is invested in driving on the road, I believe
that more practice accompanied by a teacher can lead to safer driving
habits.

Personally,
I have been lucky enough to not be in a car accident with reckless
drivers, whether they be friends or family. However, I have seen
people I know drive recklessly, often times without realizes the
mistakes they are making. While some may attribute this to poor
personal judgment, I believe these mistakes may be caused by a simple
lack of understanding or consideration of rules. To become a safer
driver, I believe the best thing that myself or anyone on the road
can do is to learn the most basic regulations of the road and to
practice them in their everyday life. If people simply begin to
incorporate these ideas into their driving, they and those around
them will create a safer driving environment.
