Education is key to reducing the amount of deaths as a result of
driving. Without learning the laws that driving entails, people may
see themselves making various mistakes, some of them life
threatening. Some steps that can be taken to reduce the number of
deaths related to driving are awareness and kindness. An example
would be in the scenario of “right of way”. A “right of way”
is given, not taken. When people are distracted, late, emotional, or
fatigued, their driving abilities will decline.
Awareness of simple driving mistakes that can result in crashes will
prevent people from making those deadly choices. Additional steps
that can reduce the number of deaths related to driving are leaving
early, following the speed limit and traffic laws, only driving
sober, and making sure you have a doctor’s approval. Some
medications may inhibit the ability to focus on the road.
When I was a child, I was in a car accident. None of us were hurt
except the car. I was hungry and at the ripe old age of four. Crying,
I distracted my mom. She reached for a bowl of noodles to give to me,
and we ended up going off the road. I learned that passengers can be
a direct cause of crashes. Luckily, we were able to safely crash into
the ditch without hitting a telephone pole.
Another instance of a car accident involving my family was a crash
was on a highway. My mom put her blinker on to turn into the
subdivision where we lived. A drunk driver disregarded her blinker
and collided with the back of my mom’s car. It was a scary situation
because my mom was taking our neighbor’s kids home to save gas and
the environment. If my mom hadn’t maneuvered the car the way she
did to avoid the intensity of the impact, it would have been likely
that drunk driving would have caused more than just bruises.
Some steps that can be taken to become a better, safer driver and to
help others become safer on the road are to only drive in good
weather conditions or drive slowly in conditions that are less than
ideal. Again, awareness of surroundings and laws is key to good
driving. If something distracts you, try not to put yourself in a
situation where you look away from the road. Do not text and drive.
Not only is it illegal, but one text is not worth one life.
If a crash should occur, it is crucial that all passengers are
wearing their seatbelts, and the airbags are working properly. Safety
is important. Statistically, seatbelts can prevent up to one-third of
car accident related deaths.
Driving safety to prevent deaths is very important because one crash
could affect many people. One crash can ruin the life someone has
built. It is so easy to take driving precautions, and it is so easy
to be distracted. If you or someone cannot concentrate, do not get
behind the wheel. Follow the road laws and be a courteous driver
around others. Try not to induce road rage. Driving means to
multi-task; try to multi-task safely.
