Driving
Erratically

Almost every day of our working
lives, we get behind the wheel in order to reach our destination.
Yet, it is rare that we think about the consequences each of us sign
up for by obtaining a driver’s license and stepping into our cars,
paying little to no attention to the risks posed to both other
motorists and ourselves. Many Americans are killed every year due to
the careless mistakes of drivers on the road who pay no heed to the
laws and road rules which ensure our safety. In order to decrease the
mortality rate amongst American motorists, we must be more
sympathetic and emphasize the importance of sobriety while on the
road.

Possessing
empathy is extremely important, as road rage is a major killer of
American drivers. Many lives are claimed due to enraged drivers who
decide to cut others off, road race, and drive aggressively rather
than defensively. It is exceptionally easy to lose your temper on the
road, with many driving erratically and over the speed limit;
however, controlling your emotions is of immense importance,
especially as you are controlling a heavy piece of machinery which
could severely harm others. When losing your temper, you’re not
solely endangering yourself but also all drivers surrounding you. It
is also important to note that although another driver may be driving
offensively, you are never aware of the conditions and passengers
they may have; the driver could be on their way to the hospital for
their spouse in labor, having a stroke themselves, and may even have
multiple children or pets in the backseat. By driving defensively, we
could all save many innocent lives.

Many
deaths on American roads are caused by driving under the influence.
Drunk driving has always been a problem in America since the car was
invented, and still poses an extreme danger to motorists. Although
having such a straightforward and simple fix, many Americans still
get in the driver’s seat and attempt to arrive at their destination
despite being under the influence. Unfortunately, many do not arrive
unharmed and severely injure others along the way, as alcohol
interferes with your vision and motor control skills, both of which
are essential for driving. An infinite number of stories exist where
DUIs are given out but not before those drivers have put someone in
harm’s way, ruining their own lives and the lives of others who
have had their spouses or relatives killed due to this careless
choice. Simply choosing a designated driver for a night out could
save the lives of many, and anyone who has consumed alcohol and gets
behind the wheel must think about the consequences of doing so.

Ultimately,
driving under the influence and road rage are major killers of
American motorists. By simply exhibiting self-control while drinking
or taking control of our emotions, we could save the lives of many
around us.
