The
Importance of Drivers ed

Nearly
33% of all motor-related fatalities are a cause of reckless driving,
claiming more than 13,000 lives a year. A majority of that percentage
involves careless drivers who feel that speeding is the best option
as well as those who fall under the influence. With the placed
requirements of Drivers ed in our world today, many of
these fatalities can be prevented for a multitude of reasons.

For
starters, what is the importance of drivers ed in reducing the
number deaths as a result of driving? Drivers ed provides a
variety of useful knowledge that informs new drivers not only of the
importance of following the rules of the road, but also the cautions
to take to avoid a situation that has already occurred. The program
presents multiple scenarios of drunk driving, reckless driving, and
texting while driving to show you just how serious the matter at hand
is. I recall the moment I watched the videos because it sets in how
real those occurrences are and how many families lose someone due to
those reckless decisions. Drivers ed can leave an impact on
those who are new to the road by encouraging them to practice driving
safely to reduce the number of losses per year.

Secondly,
what steps can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to
driving? Most definitely making Drivers ed a requirement
for ALL states and citizens of ALL ages to ensure that they are aware
of the importance of driver’s safety. I feel that if the age to opt
out of Drivers ed wasn’t restricted to 18-years-old, we
could most likely prevent even more fatalities in the future because
of the information provided in the course that many drivers have zero
knowledge of. The course provides real life situations that have
occurred from lack of driver’s safety and I feel that those videos
could really persuade drivers to practice safe driving more often.

Third
point of interest, have I ever had an experience of being in a car
accident or encountered reckless or irresponsible driving by a friend
or family member? Yes, I have been in two wrecks that were not our
fault. We were hit both times by drivers that were on their phone
instead of paying attention to the road and surrounding cars; as a
result, we ended up with totaled vehicles both times and thankfully
minor injuries. These experiences are actually major factors to my
practice of safe driving at all times because no text is worth
somebody’s life.

Lastly,
what steps can I take to be a better and safer driver as well as help
others become safer on the road? I can continue to leave my phone out
of sight while I’m driving as well as following all of the rules of
road. I can encourage others to not only partake in safe driving, but
also inform them of the dangers of not driving with caution. Safe
driving is the best form of driving and I believe that if we follow
the laws of the road and participate in Drivers ed we can
prevent more casualties from car accidents.
