I
would have never expected it. Mena, a 23-year-old who studied nursing
at a nearby University, was delighted to take up his new job;
however, the unexpected happened. Mena, accompanied with his brother
Marco, drove to the city of Kuwait. The car slipped left and right
several times before it slipped 8 meters in a valley nearby. Minutes
of silence passed, and an ambulance came to the scene, and the
results: Mena suffered a fracture of his spine and his brother broke
his fourth vertebra, which forced him to stay in bed for 2 months.

While
Mena is still receiving treatments in the hospital until today, the
fracture has temporarily paralyzed him in the lower limbs. He lost
his ability to walk and uses a device to help him. Undoubtedly, such
incidents, which require long-term rehabilitation, also have
psychological effects on the victim and his family. Mena said that
“Only the loss of my work and the postponing of my brother’s
weeding, which was to be the day after the accident, worried me the
most.” Two months after the incident, he received a grant to study
abroad at a European college; however, the size and intensity of his
injury prevented him from accepting the offer.

Although
my cousins’, Mena and Marco, experience is not the worst, their
families and friends suffered after their accident. Many young adults
think they are invincible because of their health, success, or mind.
Although they think that they have mastered the art of distracted
driving, operating a vehicle is one of the most dangerous tasks.
However, there are many ways and procedures that could be done to
prevent traffic accidents.

One
of the most critical and important procedures starts before one is
placed in the driving seat. Because driving requires concentration
and patience, taking enough driving lessons, or receiving some sort
of driving education, before actually driving is critical for your
own life and the life of others. In the driving courses, drivers
learn about the proper and safe way of driving to protect everyone
from the danger that surrounds driving a vehicle.

Also,
periodic maintenance of roads and the building of roads according to
international standers is required and needed. The enhancement of
laws and legislations to reduce traffic accidents, such as increasing
the penalties against those who exceed the speed limit and
prohibiting the use of cellphones while driving for everyone, would
also help drivers stop getting distracted and have respect to the
roads’ laws.

My
cousins’ lives changed drastically after the accident, and their
story is so easy it could happen to anyone. The first step to have
safer roads is by changing our mindsets before sitting in front of
the wheel. I hope that the story or the essay helped anyone out
there. Remember, nothing is more important than your life!

Thank
you
