Drinking
and Driving
Once
you hit your teenage years, parents know you are more likely to go
out and drink at a party. The number one thing parents say before you
leave is, “Do NOT drink and drive, you can call me if you cannot
drive.” Most of the time no one listens. We are kids and think we
can do anything we want and never pay a consequence. That is not
always the case.
I have had
experiences of being in the car with someone under the influence and
never had one bad thought cross my mind. That is the main reason why
most of the people who do drink and drive consider it to be okay.
Until your life is in danger you never think of the worst outcome.
For example, I never used to question someone’s ability to drive
while under the influence, until the night my life flashed before my
eyes. This guy I knew drove a brand new, fast Camaro and a couple of
my friends and I were all hanging out and decided, “Hey, let us
drive your car!!” Of course, sober him would have never went along
with this idea but considering he was past the sober stage he agreed
to this. My friend and I were sober at this time and drove his car
through the neighborhood. After we were done, another guy wanted to
drive, and he was not sober. I did not question his ability; I was
just going with the flow hoping he wouldn’t drive crazy. He drove
just like we did sober, so I had no problem allowing the owner of the
car to also drive. This particular decision was one of the most
thoughtless decisions I have ever made. The first thing he said to us
before putting the car in drive was, “I’m going to burn the
rubber off these tires.” He then pushed the gas going through a
very windy road, that was until we got right in front of the house
and he lost complete control going 80 miles per hour. We luckily hit
huge rocks and ran into a tree keeping us from flipping down a hill
into a neighbor’s home. The car was totaled, and no one got hurt, I
was so scared and thankful that nothing worse came from that
incident.
From
that day forward, I will never allow myself or others drive under the
influence to my control. I have been at parties where I knew someone
should not drive home and made arrangements of getting them home
safely without getting behind the wheel. Speaking from experience,
even if you think you are capable of driving you never know what can
happen in just a split second. There are so many options out there
now other than driving drunk, such as calling someone to pick you up.
Whether that be a friend, uber, or even catching a bus anything is
better than allowing yourself to be in any sort of danger.
