Driving a vehicle
and having a license is a privilege. That is what we are all told
when we get our licenses or go on our first drive without our
parents. Still many wrecks happen every day and take many lives
because many people are negligent of their vehicles and driving
habits. Lots of wrecks also happen because there are many things that
go untaught and most only learn from experience. There is so much
that can be done and taught to make driving a more safe experience
for everybody on the road.
Recently I
experienced my first wreck in my vehicle. I was on the interstate and
somebody merged into my lane and almost hit me, so I jumped into the
next lane to avoid being hit as an elderly woman sped by and I hit
her. I was put into an unavoidable situation that was legally my
fault because I didn’t know what to do. I could have stayed in my
lane and, had I been hit, it wouldn’t have been my fault because I
was maintaining my lane.
Many people get
into much worse wrecks than my little fender bender. Many people are
negligent and cause the end of a life because they were careless.
Texting and driving, drinking and driving, speeding and illegal
passing are all examples of reckless driving but are consistently
ignored by people every day. We as a country are already cracking
down on reckless driving but there is still much more we can do to
reduce the risk of death or injury when driving.
One thing we can do
to reduce this risk is making the tests to be able to get a license
harder and require more knowledge to be able to obtain a license to
drive. Something else that can be done is more focused education on
driving in drivers ed classes that teaches what to do in a
scenario where they see an accident could happen and what to do to
prevent it.
Although
many wrecks still happen every day, there are still many things that
can be done to prevent accidents on the road and make driving a more
safe experience for everybody on the road. There are already many
laws set in place to make drivers more aware and punish negligent
drivers, hopefully resulting in safer roads for us all.
