Safe
Driving Can Mean Life or Death

What’s
wrong?” I suddenly ask, noticing my dad has become tensed up while
driving at the wheel.

He
murmurs “Nothing”, as I begin to notice some cars honking at us.
Some cars are actually heading straight towards us.

He
turned on a one-way bridge by accident.

He
managed to stay far enough on the right side of the road while
driving that we didn’t get hit, and once the next intersection
light was green and clear to move my dad raced across the
intersection and on the correct road.

Contrary
to this tale, my dad is actually a relatively safe driver, he helped
teach me how to be one. My Mom has also helped me learn how to be a
safe driver. Both of them have at least 30 years of driving
experience and grew up in a heavily populated city with plenty of
traffic. Neither one has gotten into any serious accidents without
knowing how to handle it. One of the most important lessons I have
learned from them is that the best way to stay out of danger, and to
keep yourself from becoming dangerous to other drivers on the road,
is to keep your eyes and ears open for trouble.

Keep
your eyes and ears open. That means keep your radio down, keep
conversations in the car quiet and few, turn off your phone for fewer
distractions, have few or no hanging decorations on your rearview
mirror, keep your windows clear and clean, don’t drive mad, and
finally, don’t drive tired. Most importantly of all, do
not
drink and drive. There are a thousand and one threats while driving
on the road, it is important that you prepare to face all of them
with a clear mind and clear, steady emotions.

Not
too long ago my little sister was in a car accident. Her best friend
had her driving permit and was driving the car, while her grandmother
was in the passenger seat, and my sister was in the back seat. A car
coming the opposite way down the snowy road started to drive into the
other car lane which caused my sister’s friend to try to swerve
out-of-the-way, which resulted in the car crashing into the snowy
ditch. Everyone came out alive, but it was a very scary moment for
everyone. Without proper driving education this situation may have
turned out for the worse. My sister’s friend could have swerved the
wrong way, or she could’ve been so distracted that she would’ve
not noticed the car and just crashed straight into it. Safe, smart
driving means less dangerous situations for everyone.

The
dangers of the road are often times forgotten, but forgetting them
for just a few seconds while driving can mean life or death for you
and countless others. It is of the utmost importance that drivers
always stay cautious and diligent of the road and who is driving on
it.
