Driver Education Initiative – The Need for Driver Safety in Today’s Society

Today’s life gives the
common driver a way to be safe in any situation, only if they use
those tools correctly though. In modern life of the 21
st
century, there have been many inventions meant to help our drivers,
young and old, keep themselves and others on the road as safe as
possible. Internet and online testing have been one of the major ways
that has helped me pass the permit and intermediate tests in my
state. Even though I may only have my intermediate, I still see many
of the problems of driving today firsthand. I think that education of
the driver is one of, if not the, most important things. I see many
drivers today do little things, such as turning or switching lanes
without using their signals. These things aren’t inherently bad,
but they can most definitely put the life or lives of people on the
roadway in danger. There have been many times while driving through
the town I work in, that I have been cut off or someone on the road
has swerved to avoid someone that has last second decided to turn
without their signal. This brings me to another great tool of the
driver, the GPS system. It is a tool that I am very familiar with
myself, it is a tool that allows you to navigate while only listening
to it, not needing to avert your eyes from the road, making sure that
as long as you’re listening, you’ll still be able to make it to
your destination with no navigation issues. Some steps people can
take to make themselves and others safer is to constantly review the
drivers manual and rules, and maybe quiz or talk to their friends and
family as well. This way they can keep up to date on any new rules,
keep refreshed on some old rules that may be somewhat obscure, and
can keep others’ knowledge fresh on the topics as well. There was
one accident that I was in, that really showed the attentiveness of
drivers affecting their safeness on the roads. We were in a two lane
on way street, we were going to a shop that was on the left side of
the road. Due to the driver paying less attention than he should’ve
been, he was on the far right side of the street and he had to turn
in. Because he didn’t signal or check over his left shoulder, when
we turned into the store’s parking lot, another car crashed into us
from his left blind spot. This event really showed me how much it
means to be careful on the road, it’s an unintended lesson that
has, and will, stick with me throughout my whole life and driving
career. Luckily, this driving incident didn’t cause any deaths or
harm to anyone involved. Although many people in driving accidents
can’t say the same thing, studies show that nearly 1.25 million
people die in crashes annually. To those looking for a number of
daily deaths, that number happens to be 3,287. I truly believe that
one way to decline those numbers would be to add a new law. I think
that if we added a regulation that states we need to be able to
retest our road knowledge more regularly, this would include a full
exam of vision testing, written testing, and road testing. I
understand that this may be tedious, to have every 5 years or so a
retest for every driver, but I truly believe this will help to
increase our road safety and decrease the amount of annual deaths and
injuries we as a country have.
