Driving
is a huge privilege that should be taken very seriously. Driver
education is something that can help instill more trust that
individuals will be safe out on the roads. I believe that drivers
would be more cautious about their actions if they were educated on
what the detrimental consequences may be. Another positive aspect
that drivers ed provides is that it allows people to understand
the rules of the road; therefor they would drive more safely.
I believe that one
of the important steps to reducing the number of deaths related to
driving would be to create awareness of all the possibilities that
could result from driving irresponsibly. An important part of
creating awareness is making young individuals aware that they are
not exempt from the consequences. Another possible step to reducing
the amount of deaths caused by driving is to ensure people cannot
drive while intoxicated or while using their cellular devices. Those
impairments and distractions create a very dangerous situation that
often times lead to death or serious injuries.
Personally, I have
seen the horrible consequences of distracted and drunk driving. The
first experience I was exposed to was something my grandmother went
through at a very young age. My grandmother told me about a fateful
night decades ago. My grandmother was in the car with her sister and
her mother heading home from a family Christmas party when a drunk
driver hit them. My great grandmother was killed on impact, and my
grandmother had to witness the whole thing. This is something that
affects my grandmother still today. Possibly if there was a way to
prevent that man from getting in his car that night, my great
grandmother would have been able to raise her children. I also have
personally been in a car accident. I was stopped at a light, heading
home from school, when a distracted drive came barreling at full
speed into the back of my car. This was a very scary experience that
could have been easily prevented if the guy who was driving would
have just put his phone down.
Due to my
experiences with consequences of irresponsible driving, as well as
the drivers ed I have received, I will dedicate myself to
driving responsibly. I will never drive while impaired, and I will
take precautions to prevent myself from driving distracted. I plan on
putting my phone in my glove box while I’m driving, and not having
access to it. I hope that by me doing these things I will be able to
become a safe driver and do my part in reducing the amount of
detrimental accidents.
