In the Driver’s Seat as a Young Adult

As a new driver, I am and was completely nervous about getting
behind the wheel. There are 30 hours of instruction, 6 hours of
professional instruction, and at a minimum of 50 hours of practice
with an adult of 25 years or more before even taking the driver’s
test. Yet, even after getting a driver’s license, many teenagers
feel freedom and neglect the rules of the road. With the invention
of the smartphone, I see so many people on the phone while driving
and not paying attention to their surroundings. Teenagers are so
eager to get to place to place.

We need to stop and think before getting on the road. In 2012,
there were about 35,000 deaths due to Highway Fatalities. Just
taking your eyes of the road for 5 seconds can cause an accident for
other drivers, or innocent pedestrians walking on the road. The
deaths caused due to drivers who just were not paying attention.
This is more deaths than many wars such as the Korean War, The
American Revolution or the Iraq War.

I hear on the news about DUI drivers, or people driving on
dangerous roads that have caused fatalities. This can be changed,
and needs to change. We can reduce the number of deaths related to
driving. Even though high schools don’t offer Driver’s
Education, school can still provide facts about driving and have
guest speakers from the DMV or the Police Department to share facts
about driving on the road during certain times of the year. At home,
we can have commercials that share facts about driving on the road
during certain conditions. Car companies and Police Departments can
get together to broadcast dangerous driving conditions. Even parents
talking to their kids about driving can help save a life.

I personally have never been in a car accident, but I’ve
seen accidents up close. They are terrifying and unexpected. Next
time on the road I will double check the road for any hazards or
careless drivers. I will not drive with my cell phone on, check the
road constantly and have my eyes peeled for any drivers who just
should not be driving. Keeping the road safe for everyone is
important. The next driver can be our future president. I plan to
drive safe and keep the roads safe as best I can. What will you do,
to keep the road safe?
