Cars
are on the road more so today than a century ago. However, with this
more convenient mode of transportation, there is also great risk and
danger. As more and more commuters are one the road, especially
around holidays, these dangers are often overlooked. For the safety
of all commuters alike, the signs and warnings must be heeded so the
preventable accidents can decrease.
One
of the main methods to educate current and future drivers is driver
education. While the course may seem technical and uninteresting, it
is very important because it exposes drivers to the dangers of the
road, without being physically on the road. The education, coupled
with the experience that drivers gain daily, provides a good
foundation for good and safe driving. Most often however, driver
education is written off as three weeks of information that should be
common sense, and yet hundreds of people die in relation to
automobiles every year. As such, drivers ed is very important
because it exposes early drivers to the dangers and lays out the
consequences of dangerous driving.
There
are some steps that can reduce the number of driver related deaths.
For example, placing a ban on people using their phones while
driving. Bars and other places that serve alcohol during certain
hours can require every party of people to have a designated driver,
or the government can place a ban on alcohol entirely.
Thankfully,
I have not had the experience of being in a car accident nor have I
witnessed my family driving irresponsibly, such as under the
influence of drugs or alcohol. However, we do make it a point to
constantly be aware of our surroundings and be aware of the
consequences of driving irresponsibly. For example, in a deadly
drinking and driving incident, the person or people killed are not
the only victims, it also effects that person’s family and friends.
Some
steps that I can take to become a better safer driver is to develop
good driving habits and be aware of my surroundings. I try to
separate what could cause an accident versus what cannot.
Overall,
driving overall is dangerous but with the correct steps and awareness
all drivers should have, the number of deaths can decrease.
